Report: Greycells Open Quiz, April 7

A quiz on the day before Easter may have been forgiven for poor turnout. But quizzers in Kerala didnot disappoint the organisers when they arrived in full strength to join an occasion that, hopefully, will be an auspicious rebirth for Greycells. The first quizzing organisation to truly encompass the whole state, had finally come of age. In its bid to popularise and sustain a new culture of quizzing in the state, Greycells organised its first Open quiz at FACT Udyogamandal Club on April 7.
The announcement of the event had already invoked considerable interest in the media and the web. Quizzers from yesteryears returned to their favourite sport to relive those great moments. The format was tailored to meet everyone's expectations. The best 6 senior teams in the prelims were paired with the best 6 school teams to form teams of 4 members each. The teams then battled out in a marathon finals for glory.
The prelims paper was lengthy with around 40 questions. There was tough competition for the last spot in the finals. A tiebreak round of 5 questions was needed to decide the 6th team in the finals. Harikrishnan and Toneesh , two regulars in the circuit 15 years ago, edged out their opposition for the last spot. The quiz also saw a team coming down from Hyderabad to take part-Rahul Girish and Harikrishnan, formerly of GEC, Thrissur.
All the teams were in fine form and gave out some spectacular answers. Rajesh Mohan and Lloyd Colopilly, the quiz masters, pulled out several chestnuts and entertained the participants.
The team of Arun A S,Hrishi Varma,Ganesh and Ashok put up a dazzling show to take the cup. Rahul-Hari and team finished second. Anil Raghavan,Viswas Viswam,Arun George and Sudarshan came third. The school participants paired with veterans also gave several stunning answers. Arun George, Sudarshan, Ganesh, Ashok etc were some of the school students who displayed their mettle in the event.
The prizes were allocated as 1600,1200,800,400,400,400 for the 6 teams. All in all, it was a humble start, but a proud and promising one nevertheless. The wide publicity received in the media and the enthusiastic support from students, faculty and prominent personalities have raised hopes of a bright future for the endeavour.
The quiz saw sponsorship and support coming from corporate houses like Malayala Manorama, Indian Oil Corporation and Aspinwall Group. Some invaluable contributions from ex-quizzers like Devadas Krishnan and Sanjay Mallya were also received.

It will be wonderful if participants could give the names of their school-student team members. Leave the names in the comments section. We will update them.
